Newsbites: Upcoming Books 2011 and beyond

Laini Taylor ~ Daughter of Smoke and Bone YA

To be published by Little Brown Books for Young Readers Fall 2011.

It is about a pair of star-crossed lovers kept apart by the fact that one’s an angel and the other’s a demon; also woven into the tale is the story of the devil’s adopted daughter, a blue-haired art student in Prague.

How about the very unfinished Dreamdark series?

Laini says “re: more Dreamdark books: some day I will finish the series! I am deeply committed to Magpie and crew and feel sick about leaving them in limbo. I will see their story through. It is just not in the cards for the next few years.”

Sarah Prineas ~ Has a three book deal with the UK publisher Quercus.

So the Crow book is not the first in a trilogy, though it may end up having a “companion” (I have proposed a sequel). The UK publisher took Crow and two books to-be-determined. I’m fairly certain one of those TBD books will be the fourth Magic Thief book (I’m still waiting to hear if it’ll be one of the TBD books my US publisher took…)

Edit Oct. 2010 ~ The “Crow book” is now officially Winterling. To be published 2012.

A girl named Fer who travels to a magical land where she has to discover who she truly is while putting right a terrible wrong. She’s helped by a tricksy puck-boy named Rook and a wild horse named Phouka.”

Gail Carriger ~ : Heartless, Book the Fourth in the Parasol Protectorate series, will be out July 2011 from Orbit. Timeless, the fifth and final in this set of stories will be out in Spring 2012. Adult steampunk/paranormal fantasy.

Eoin Colfer ~ The Eighth Artemis Fowl , title and publication date n/a.

Eoin Colfer has told The Guardian that the next book in the series, number 8, is going to be the very last one.

“That’s how I’m going to finish it, on a very simple choice.”

“There’s not going to be any huge battle, and going up the stairs to heaven, it’s not going to be that kind of finish.” he added. “There will be the big adventure, but the end will be in a little epilogue.” End of story.  Ha! After watching the interview, and having read many of his interviews over the years, the only true thing I know is that Eoin loves saying contradictory things, especially about Holly and Artemis, as well as deciding which book will be the last. First the third, then the fourth. Not that I don’t believe him, simply that in all things it is worthwhile to take it as possible misdirection.

Anne Osterlund ~ Exile, the sequel to Aurelia, is out April 28th, 2011 from Penguin. YA.

No news for a sequel yet for Academy 7, but Anne’s other story, Salvation, which tells Beth and Salva’s story, is tentatively scheduled for release in 2012.

Kersten Hamilton~ “My next project, after book two of Goblin Wars, is an early MG steampunk series. After that, I’m going to pushing new horizons with a “Holes”-esque older MG dealing with suicide, Catholicism, immigration issues plus one undead school administrator. I will probably write a realistic picture book for the very young along the way—nitty-gritty for the itty-bitty if you will. Then, it is back to the YA world for the third book in the Goblin Wars trilogy…”

Sarah Rees Brennan ~ The Demon’s Surrender, Book the Third of the Demon’s Lexicon Trilogy in May/Summer 2011.

In response to the question: Are you planning to write a stand alone book next or another series?

“Actually, I’m working on a couple of things at the moment: one is a stand alone, and the other the first in a series. Writing a standalone is fun for a change, but I admit I usually get attached to a set of characters, and I want to stretch out their stories, and relax a bit and have fun with them, and watch them develop over a longer period of time. Plus I love the feeling of finally getting the next book in a series you love, and I hope some people feel that way when they get the next book from me!”

Do you think you’ll come back to your older stories and try to rework them for publication? Or are you happy with them where they are?
“Some ideas, I want to go back to. In fact one of the books I’m working on now is based on an idea I had when I was seventeen, and I completed a book about it, too. But the book I’m writing based on that idea now and the book I wrote then are very different – which is really interesting! Mostly I see the books as learning experiences.

Moira J. Moore ~ The sixth Lee and Taro book Heroes at Odds, late summer 2011 from Ace. Adult fantasy.

Rebecca J. Anderson ~ Arrow from Orchard books in UK January 2011 and Swift by the same in 2012. There are no US publication dates at present.

Touching Indigo is now Ultraviolet. *sadface* I preferred the first title. Ho, hum. Ultraviolet is to be published in UK by Orchard Books, Summer 2011 and in US by Carolrhoda Lab, Fall 2011.

Isobelle Carmody ~ The Sending by Penguin Publishers in AU May 2011. No concrete date from the American publishers Random House, though they plan to split the book into two: The Red Queen and The Sending. This would be the very long awaited conclusion to Carmody’s Obernewtyn Chronicles.

Brian Jacques ~ The Rogue Crew (Redwall series) in 2011

R. L. LaFevers ~ Theodosia and the Last Pharoh April 2011 (fourth in Theodosia series) and The Unicorn’s Tale, the fourth book in the Nathaniel Fludd, Beastologist series, also April 2011.

Julia Golding ~ Cat’s Cradle (Sixth Cat Royal book) in July 2011 UK. No US date yet. She is also writing another series set in the Companions series world, but no publishing info yet.

Kelley Armstrong ~ The Gathering (Fourth Darkest Powers ) April 2011 UK + US.

Rick Riordan ~ The Kane Chronicles #2 (with no fixed title; publication date May 2011) and Heroes of Olympus #2, Son of Neptune, Fall of 2011.

Sherwood Smith ~ Banner of the Damned, Part 1: Summer Thunder September 2011. Part 2 is due out the following year.

Ilona Andrews ~ Kate Daniels #5, Magic Slays, June 2011. Two more under contract. Adult urban fantasy.

Patricia Briggs ~ Alpha and Omega #3 Fall/ October 2011. I do believe that is it for this series. Adult fantasy.

I’ll be updating this as more information becomes available and adding titles as I find them.
